Student Advisement & Mentoring

First year student mentors
When you arrive at Johns Hopkins you will be advised by a preceptor.  He or she will serve as your mentor until you choose a thesis research advisor in May of your first year in residence.

Current student Mary-Katherine Tarrant with preceptor Dr. Jin Zhang

Choosing courses
At the start of the Fall semester you will be advised by a group of CBI preceptors who will help you select courses that meet your needs and suit your individual interests.

Selecting a thesis research lab and advisor
As a student in the CBI program you will carry out 3 research rotations, then choose a research advisor(s) in May of your first year at Johns Hopkins.
• Each rotation will be approximately 10 weeks in duration
• Your Research rotations will be carried out in at least two different departments
• The research advisor that you select need not be one with whom you have done a rotation.
